Dutch Retailer Albert Heijn rolls out dynamic discounting
Products approaching their best-before dates are now being discounted via an electronic system at Albert Heijn. Discounts can extend up to 70% of the regular selling price. With this new initiative, Albert Heijn is saying goodbye to the 35% discount sticker.
The exact discount will be shown on an electronic shelf tag. Albert Heijn aims to use dynamic discounting to reduce food waste and is hoping to avoid leaving unsellable products at the end of the day. Alongside dynamic discounting, Albert Heijn has also recently introduced leftover packs, an initiative which Albert Heijn believes will help it save around 4.5 million kilos of food waste annually.
Albert Heijn is also reducing costs on other fronts: all chicken products are now packed in a bag instead of a tray. This will save 95,000 kg of plastic per year, a saving of 70%.
