The consumption of food supplements in Spain has already achieved a sales level of more than €2 billion with more than 300 companies selling mainly through pharmacies, the natural channel and on-line marketplaces

The food supplements market in Spain, according to a Euromonitor survey in 2023, could continue to grow at a rate of 5%+ per annum over the next 5 years.

The main reasons behind that growth are demographic developments in Spain (more than 20% of population is aged 65 years+, and projected to be 25% in year 2028), the increase in allergies and intolerances and the overall concern for a healthy lifestyle.

These developments present however some challenges due to the lack of common EU regulations and harmonization, the still pending clarification of levels of vitamins and minerals to be contained in a “food supplement” and the clarification of usage of herbs and medicinal plants.

According to the AINIA Food Technology Institute survey on Consumers Opinion (November 2023) clearly the preferred compositions are multivitamins, minerals and plants, followed by probiotics.

The current drivers for consumption of these products in Spain are energy and revitalising boosts, immune system facilitators, relaxation and sleep-aid products and then the hair/nail segment, according to AFEPADI (The Spanish association of Food Supplements companies) who also state in their annual report 2023 that more than 78% of Spanish consumers claim to use or have used food supplements in their normal diet.

AFEPADI groups together more than 130 companies, with 11,000 employees fostering innovation in the sector and awareness of the quality and benefits of the Spanish food supplements.

In this respect the important VITAFOODS Trade show will be celebrated in Barcelona in 2025 as testimony of the growing weight of the Spanish consumption in the European context after Germany and Italy.
