In the current context of uncertainty and recent price volatility, 2 out of 3 Spaniards have significantly altered their food and drink consumption habits, according to a very insightful survey conducted in March 2025 by AINIA, the leading food and drink research centre in Spain.
More intake of fresh produce, eggs and legumes and less seafood, carbonated drinks and spirits are the main highlights. Though taste and quality are still main factors in decision making , prices have moved higher up in the ranking of purchasing criteria.
Supermarkets continue to be the most competitive places for shoppers with an increase of baskets of own label products being bought in the discounters.
There are even changes in cooking habits with clear signs of adaptation to an uncertain environment. Two-thirds of Spanish consumers are cooking less fried meals and increasing their intake of vegetables.
In order to adapt to a trend for convenience the main winners are the ready-to-eat products prepared and sold freshly made at the supermarket special counter, where especially Mercadona and Carrefour are targeting in shoppers in an innovative way.
