After much criticism Nutri-Score is here.

The Nutri-Score is a traffic light system that helps consumers to make healthier choices when buying products. Although the system has been known abroad for years, its introduction in the Netherlands was met with some criticism. Supermarkets were frustrated. They were not allowed to put the logo on their own packaging, while foreign companies could. But since this year, the Nutri-Score has appeared on more and more packaging in Dutch supermarkets. The Nutri-Score has been criticised because it does not necessarily mean that a green labelled product is healthy. It simply means that it is healthier within its category than competing products with an orange or red label. Nevertheless, manufacturers like PepsiCo have adjusted recipes to improve scores. This has led to discussions among consumers about taste changes, like the ‘Snackspert’. Despite the criticism, the Ministry of Health, Welfare and Sport points out that the Nutri-Score is intended to help consumers make healthier choices, especially for products not included in the Food Wheel. Research shows that the Nutri-Score works. It helps consumers make healthier choices. This is emphasised by the colour and letter codes. These give a clear signal and evoke associations with traffic lights or grades. The Dutch are mostly positive about the introduction of the Nutri-Score and the majority think it is a good idea. To make the logo even more visible to consumers, a campaign has been launched. This could be a contribution to a more conscious choice for healthier food.
