Brexit and ‘Operation Snack’
A few days ago the UK media reported that a lorry driver heading to the EU had his ham and cheese sandwich confiscated by overzealous Dutch customs officials – for contravening EU laws preventing personal imports of meat and dairy items.
In a smart, media savvy response, vegan food supplier LoveSeitan has teamed up with sandwich business Simply Lunch to distribute meat and dairy free sandwiches to hauliers near the Eurotunnel in Kent over the weekend, in an effort ‘to support key workers in need of good food.’
Operation Snack, as the initiative has been dubbed, is a play on ‘Operation Stack’, the UK government’s scheme to ensure lorries waiting to cross the channel can be lined up without blocking motorway routes for other drivers. It has been a frustrating time over the last month for many UK businesses coming to terms with new customs documentation as they try to ensure smooth continuation of deliveries to EU customers. Particularly hit has been the Scottish seafood sector whose premium seafood catch is largely destined for France, Spain and other European markets rather than a domestic audience.
So while Operation Snack may provide a little light-hearted diversion from the real issues being faced by many exporters at present, the industry is putting real pressure on the government to find solutions to address some of the IT and customs frustrations. A free trade deal is a great relief, but let’s hope for smoother passage in the months to come.
