Delhaize saves 86 tonnes of plastic with new cheese packaging
Delhaize has taken another step forward to reduce its carbon footprint by changing the packaging of a wide selection of cheeses into more environmentally friendly packaging. This important initiative is the result of ongoing work on a commitment to sustainability. The supermarket chain says it will soon be able to save 86 tonnes of plastic annually for the packaging of three cheese ranges under the Delhaize brand: Oudendijk, the freshly packed cheese specialities and, from June, Belgian Gouda.
It involves 21 references of cheeses, reducing plastic use by 37 to 64% compared to the current packaging. The young Gouda in slices alone would account for a saving of 20 tonnes of plastic per year. The flexible, thinner packaging will also consist of only one type of material, making sorting and recycling easier.
Delhaize faced a number of challenges during this transition. First, existing packaging on the market had to be found where plastic could be significantly reduced, but without compromising the shelf life of the cheese; a crucial aspect of minimising food waste. Moreover, suppliers had to invest in production lines adapted to the new packaging, which required specific technologies.
“We extended the expiry dates for 16 references, as much as three-quarters of the range. In fact, for some references, the shelf life has not only been extended but doubled”, says Camille Broquet, cheese buyer.
For other products or product ranges too, the intention is to gradually switch to more environmentally friendly packaging, says the supermarket chain.
The Lion’s Footprint initiative, launched in 2019 as part of its environmental commitment, has already borne fruit. Since May 2019, it has resulted in impressive savings, including a reduction of more than 3,251 tonnes of plastic, 81,116 tonnes of carbon and 6,252 tonnes of waste. These results show Delhaize’s ongoing commitment to actively contribute to preserving the environment and promoting a sustainable lifestyle.
