Delhaize to double plant-based range by 2025
Delhaize is planning to double its range of plant-based meat and dairy substitutes to 800 references within three years. The supermarket chain expects a massive shift to plant-based food.
Plant-based food is on the rise and Delhaize wants to balance offer and demand. “By increasing the range and making it more clearly visible in the shop, we want to make that range more accessible, because we are well aware that there may still be some barriers. People are not always familiar with the taste and texture. Or they think it is very expensive” says spokesperson Roel Dekelver.
In this way, Delhaize is also responding to the Green Deal. The Flemish government wants consumers to obtain 60% of their proteins from vegetable products by 2030.
The strength of an innovative retailer is to launch new products just before its customer asks for it. Delhaize clearly wants to take the lead in Belgium in this category. It is a clear reaction on the growing group of flexitarians, consumers who want to reduce their animal protein intake.
