Despite reduced purchases, Poles still value loyalty
62% of Poles say that the current economic situation has changed their shopping behaviour. Compared to last year, we look more closely at our expenditure, compare prices in different stores, succumb less often to cravings, and are buying less overall.
Study results
The quality, freshness and health benefits of the products we put in the basket are important to us. It is not surprising, therefore, that 32% of Poles declare that they now buy products from local producers more often than before, traditionally considered better and healthier. These and other current shopping trends of Poles are reported in a study conducted as part of the “I choose local” initiative of PSH Lewiatan Polish retail chain.
Changes in our consumer behaviour are primarily about how we buy. And we buy with greater consideration – 17% of respondents are buyimng less than the previous year, 31% focus on essentials only and 32% say they shop to a specific list. Also, 32% of respondents are more likely to compare prices in different stores,, and 38% of respondents choose products at promotional prices.
Quality, buying local and health
Consumers see a number of advantages of buying from regional producers. According to 61% of respondents, local products are fresher and tastier (say 44%). This is important, because currently 28% of respondents report that they buy a lot of fresh products, and 44% that they often choose seasonal fruits and vegetables. Almost half also rate local products as healthier –and 30% choose them specifically because of the smaller amount of preservatives. The choice of products from local producers and suppliers also has a patriotic background for Poles – as many as half of the respondents acknowledge that among the greatest advantages of buying from regional producers is supporting the development of the local economy (51%).
Selection of local values
‘Today, for consumers, a product is more than just an ingredient to prepare dishes. For Poles, the provenance that accompanies it is becoming more and more important – the methods of production, the family of the producer’s company, or the origin from a well-known local farm or production site. The choice of local products is also a choice of values that follow the decision.’ says Marcin Poniatowski, Member of the Management Board of Lewiatan Holding S.A.
