EDEKA Clear No. 1 in German Food Retail
Lebensmittelzeitung and EHI recently published latest data on the German grocery market (to end December 2022). As expected, the No. 1 was again the Hamburg-based EDEKA.
Due to inflation, total food retail increased by 8.6% in 2022 to €219.7 bn, still lower than actual food inflation which amounted to 13.4% over the year. Amongst the Top 4, Lidl was the winner with growth of +14.2%, making it a very successful year for the Schwarz Group (Lidl’s owner). In 2022, the Top 4 accounted for 80% of total food retail.
The actual number of food retail outlets grew by 630 in 2022 to 36,928. This growth was accounted for entirely by the Top 4.
