Gen Z may be the saviour of the UK Organic Market as volume and value sales increases outpace standard products
Value sales of organic food and drink have doubled over the last 10 years and were up 7.3% this year, according to the 26th Organic Market Report 2025 from Soil Association Certification. The market is now worth £3.7 billion and sales have increased across all major channels, with supermarket sales increasing 8%.
Unit sales of organics have also grown more than four times more than those of standard products.
In recent periods the organic market has suffered during the cost of living crisis, and has struggled to match the growth and relative importance the sector has in some other European markets, but recent performance is now painting a much more positive picture of future potential, according to Soil Association Certification commercial and marketing director Georgia Phillips: “The signs are strong that this growth is here to stay with increasing consumer demand, particularly from Gen Z shoppers who are increasingly motivated by healthy and sustainable choices and seeking out organic products.”
Organic dairy and produce categories continue to have the highest share of organic sales – accounting for almost half (49%) of all organic sales made through major retail. These are viewed as the traditional entry points into the category.
The online channel also continues to perform strongly, with organic twice as likely to be shopped digitally through the grocery multiples, and retailers like Ocado overindexing on organic. Home delivery, which has always been an important channel for organic sales – making up 15% of the market – is now back in growth, seeing a 3% uplift.
