Grocery sales growth in Portugal driven by private label
Recent data from Nielsen reveals that sales of FMCG products increased by 14.1% over the last quarter in Portugal.
However, when we split out own label performance from brands, the former increased 22.9% whereas the latter by only 7.8%.
Accumulated figures for the year show that the current own label share is 38.7% in value terms, and for food only that share grows to 45.5%.
In terms of categories, the sub-sector where own label share is the highest is in frozen, accounting for 54% in value.
Under the current economic context dominated by inflation, the consumer is losing purchasing power and this trend is most likely to accelerate even further
