Organic food and drink sales in Denmark and Sweden carve out a significant share
Denmark and Sweden are often called pioneering countries in organic food and drink. They are among the top performing countries when it comes to the organic share of total sales of food and drink. Denmark has the largest share at around 13% and Sweden has a share of around 9%. Both countries have set goals to achieve a 60% organic share of all public procurement of food and drink by 2030.
Over the last year Sweden has lost momentum and the share of organics has decreased whereas Denmark has continued the development albeit at a slightly lower pace.
Swedish penetration has been influenced by the fact that the largest retailer ICA has withdrawn promotions on organic products.
It is remarkable that Denmark so far is staying at a level of 13% organic products.
Stakeholders in both countries are confident that the positive development of buying organic products will continue over the next decade despite this slowdown which is viewed as temporary. Total sales of organic reached €2.46 billion euro in Denmark and € 3.3 billion in Sweden in 2021.
