Organic food consumption and production in Spain – 2022

Per capita consumption of organic products in Spain has gone up to 60 euros a year in 2022 – or +3% over the last 5 years.

Steady progress but still some distance from the Danish 384 euros per head or the 187 euros per capita consumed in France, according to ECOVALIA survey in 2022 Annual Report.

The Spanish consumer is still spending a modest 3 % of total food and beverage expenditure on organic products even though the total production capability is 10 % if we consider the UAA (useful agricultural area).

The leading products in the organic shopping basket are fruits and vegetables which account for 30%, followed by meat with 15%.

As for the points of sale it is worth noting that 48% of these products are bought in generalist retailers ,where private label brands are gaining traction with around 38% market share, while 35% are purchased in the specialist channel which is growing its number of stores to a significant 260 stores or a 4% of total stores in modern retail.

According to ECOVALIA -the Sector Organisation- the aim is to achieve consumption levels of 200 euros per capita by 2030 which would represent jumping from 3% to 10% of total consumption or multiply by 3 the current per capita rate.
