Organic Market in Germany: Growth, Trends, and Opportunities for International Companies
The German organic food market experienced impressive growth of 5.7% in 2024, reaching a turnover of approximately 17 billion euros. This growth reflects the increasing consumer interest in organically produced food.
Although organically farmed land in Germany now accounts for 11.4% of total agricultural land, domestic production is insufficient to meet the growing demand. As a result, the German organic market may increasingly rely on imports—an opportunity for international suppliers to strategically position themselves.
Consumers place great importance on aspects such as animal welfare, sustainable production, and supporting local agriculture when purchasing organic products. A recent study shows that 97% of all German households buy organic food at least occasionally. However, organic products currently account for only about 6.3% of total food sales, highlighting significant growth potential.
Organic food is also gaining importance in the out-of-home catering sector. With the introduction of the Organic Out-of-Home Catering Ordinance (Bio-AHVV) in October 2023, a certification system with Bronze, Silver, and Gold labels was implemented to indicate the organic share in restaurants, canteens, and cafeterias. This initiative aims to provide transparency for customers and allow businesses to showcase their commitment to sustainable catering.
For international companies in the food & drink sector, the German organic market offers attractive opportunities. The rising demand for sustainable and locally sourced products, combined with consumers’ increasing awareness of healthy nutrition, creates a favorable environment for market entry. However, it is essential to consider local preferences and quality standards to establish a successful foothold in both the German retail and foodservice markets.
