Sustainable packaging of great importance for consumers’ purchasing decision:
Over the past 25 years, plastic packaging waste in Germany has doubled to approx. 38 kg per capita per year which is significantly more than the average EU citizen with 24 kg was responsible for1). Fortunately consumers become more and more aware that this represents an enormous waste of resources and an unreasonable burden on the environment: A survey by German Packaging Institute2) showed that almost 70 percent of Germans have already refused buying a product at least once because the packaging was not sustainable enough from their point of view. Almost every fifth person does this on a regular basis.
German retailers have great plans to meet these new requirements: Shopping bags, cotton buds and straws without plastics and zero-plastics-tests in the area of organic fruit and vegetables to gain initial experience are just the beginning of comprehensive sustainability campaigns. A few examples: Rewe Group’s goal for private label products and the fresh counters is to reduce plastics packaging, to facilitate reusable alternatives and alternative raw materials and to use one hundred percent certified paper packaging by the end of 20203). Aldi Nord and Aldi Süd want to reduce their packaging waste by 30 percent by 2025 and by the end of 2022, all private label product packaging should also be recyclable4).
German retailers and their suppliers for food and drink rely strongly on the technology and knowledge of experienced packaging manufacturers. Contact us if you would like to explore new business opportunities with German manufacturers and retailers.
