The Active Lifestyle Wave: How Sport and Performance Are Reshaping French FMCG

The convergence of fitness culture and daily consumption is no longer a niche trend : it is actively redefining the French FMCG landscape. A recent comprehensive dossier by LSA Conso, drawing on data from NielsenIQ, Worldpanel by Numerator, and BVA-Ipsos, highlights a major structural shift across retail aisles. In a nation where 72% of citizens now engage in regular sports activities (averaging 4 hours and 12 minutes per week), performance, active health, and functional nutrition have become decisive drivers of purchasing behavior.

A functional boom led by high-protein and energy

While overall volume growth in traditional retail remains subdued, functional categories are delivering double-digit expansion. The high-protein “sport” ultra-fresh segment has reached €127 million with a 10% growth rate, spearheaded by Skyr, which surged by 27% to €347 million and now reaches 43% household penetration in France. Concurrently, the lactose-free ultra-fresh segment jumped by 181.5%, showing that health-focused reformulation is driving strong incremental value. Energy drinks have similarly expanded to a €795 million market with 25% growth. Innovation reflects this acceleration: a record 23 functional innovations were introduced in 2025 alone, accounting for 19% of total innovation sales within just three months of launch.

Cross-category expansion and athlete-led disruptors

This high-protein narrative is rapidly spilling over from traditional dairy into broader grocery categories. Mainstream brands are reformulating to capture active demand, introducing protein-enriched mozzarella from Casa Azzurra, functional meal salads with 25 grams of protein from Daunat, enriched cheese from Mini-Babybel, high-protein pasta with Barilla Protein+, lean horse meat from Renée & René, and specialized fruit pouches like Pom’Potes Sport. At the same time, the market is witnessing the rise of champion-entrepreneurs who leverage their personal credibility to launch successful food ventures. Influencer-led Inshape Nutrition generated €5.8 million in retail sales in just six months, becoming the 14th top FMCG innovation of the year, while Formula 1 driver Charles Leclerc’s ice cream brand, Lec, reached €1.19 million in its launch phase.

Strategic implications for international brands

Ultimately, the French market is undergoing a transition from traditional indulgence toward value-added products that offer tangible physical benefits such as energy, recovery, and immunity. For international players entering or expanding in France, success requires prioritizing sensory appeal alongside functional claims, as taste remains the non-negotiable key to repeat purchases. Brands must also anticipate raw material constraints associated with concentrated formulations such as Skyr requiring 3 kilograms of milk for every single kilogram produced, while maintaining a clear premium positioning to differentiate themselves from aggressive private label lines like Auchan’s Eat’n Move or Coopérative U’s Protéines +.
