Together with Sweden, the Netherlands leads the way in online shopping

Research by PayPal shows the Netherlands has the highest penetration score together with Sweden in terms of online purchases. More than 80% of the Dutch population has purchased online at some point. In Portugal, for example, this is only 65%. More than 64% of the Dutch population have ordered online meals from in-home delivery restaurants. Here Greece scores the highest with 65% and Sweden scores the lowest with only 33%.

Saving time, being able to order all groceries at once or being able to find the best deal are all key motivations for online shopping. Reasons for not buying online include, amongst other factors, being able to see groceries first before buying them and online groceries being considered too expensive. Motivations for not purchasing meals online include the perception that offers are not healthy or a preference to buy directly from local restaurants.
